Václav Bělohradský

Professor Václav Bělohradský (b. 1944, Prague) is a contemporary Czech philosopher and sociologist. He graduated in philosophy and Czech language from Charles University, Prague, and has lived in Italy since 1970, where he is currently professor of political sociology at the University of Trieste. Cited as one of Václav Havel’s intellectual influences in the mid-1980s, he was later one of the first Central European thinkers to examine the consequences of a “post-modern turn” for the region. He is a representative of the concept of biocentrism, which he developed to refuse the excessive anthropocentric focus on symbols and culture. He also believes in the need to step back from “us” so we can lay the foundations for a new and freer society.
